Today the Touch and Feel pool was full of letters. There were strings for us to find the letters in our names, get them in the right order, and lace them into a necklace. And....if that was too difficult....we just had fun naming things that started with each letter!
Ms. Michelle was here today....and even though the grass was still wet.....we finally got to be outside! She had an obstacle course set up that started with bear walking. Bear walking is walking using hands and feet on the ground....with our bottoms up in the air. After bear walking through a hoop, balancing was next. Climbing up one beam and stepping across to another beam. The last step was jumping over a small block. Lots of motor planning needed for all those movements! Then each child took a turn playing croquet. The most difficult part was understanding the nature of croquet movements.....and how that differs from, say, golf or baseball!
Our book today was Butterfly Birthday by Harriet Ziefert. This book talks about how on the first day of spring, all kinds of bugs come out to greet each other after the cold winter. They all have a beautiful party to celebrate spring, and caterpillars hatch from their chrysalises to join in the fun!
For our language circle, we made a list of all the bugs we could think of that fly. The kids were really thinking....using the insects from the book, but also using some of their own experiences too.
Before we transitioned to art, we watched some videos about mixing colors that was going to useful in our project. We have been practicing basic colors each morning.....but this lesson was about making new colors. The kids were super excited.....
Art today was making our own beautiful butterfly. We used ziploc bags filled with two colors of paint. The kids got to choose their two colors....and made predictions about what new color they would "make" once the colors were mixed up. We taped both ends of the bag to prevent any messes....or to prevent most messes.....and then the kiddos got to mixing. While they waited for pipe cleaner antenna....they practiced writing letters and drawing in the paint bags. But, when we were all finished.....the cutest butterflies ever!
