We started the day with a Touch and Feel pool full of bugs. All kinds of bugs.....ladybugs, bees, butterflies, crickets, grasshoppers, and more. The kids had fun identifying and describing them to each other. For morning circle, we talked about the letter S. We practiced making the S sound, and came up with LOTS of words that start with S.
Ms. Danielle was here for Young Athletes. We were outside in the beautiful weather learning about running and jumping. First the kids started with a modified game of Red Light, Green Light. First we ran from one end of the field to the other, listening closely and stopping when she said RED LIGHT! Then, we walked, and after that we hopped. Definitely running was the easiest. The next activity was jumping across colored seven stars using both feet. Then, we took turn running through a line of cones, weaving in and out. So much fun....and the sunshine made it even better!
Ms. Stacey was back for music today! We sang along with our Hello song and then learned part of our song of the month, Animals Are Different. Next everyone got a drum and we did a song about pond animals, where the kids had to remember when to play drums and when to sing, and we took turns fishing for animals that live in the pond to sing about. Using the fishing rod to catch them rather than picking them up with hands was tricky! After that, we practiced listening skills while Ms. Stacey sang another song about pond animals - the kids had to listen close because the song didn't say the animals name, but described it. When we guessed the right animal base don clues heard int eh song, we got to move around like that animal - we swam like fish, hopped like frogs, and crawled like turtles! Finally, we got the drums back to practice playing and stopping one more time in a turn taking song called I've Got The Groove. We ended with our goodbye song, See You Later Alligator.
Our story today was Nathan's Fishing Trip by Lulu Delacre. Nathan the elephant and Nicholas Alexander the mouse are preparing for Nathan's first fishing trip. After many unsuccessful attempts to hook a fish, Nathan uses his trunk to good advantage and pulls in a trout. The friends make preparations for supper but find the fish too pretty to eat. After returning it to the lake, the two content themselves with their soggy peanut butter and cucumber sandwiches.
Our language chart today was about fish body parts. We have been talking a lot lately about how animals are different than people....and fish are really different. First, they have to live in water. And, they use gills to breathe, not lungs. Their bodies are covered with scales not skin. But, fish and people are alike in some ways too. We both have eyes and a mouth.
Mr. Jon worked on jumping today too! First, the kids practiced jumping with one foot and then with two feet together. Next, we used bean bags to follow directions and work on our hand/eye coordination. Then, they worked on kicking their legs over the barrier...this was to help get ready for a cartwheel. Then we had a snowball fight will big foam balls. The practice skill was jumping with one leg in front of the other and then switching.
