There were centers to start the day this morning. One center was using shapes to make tangrams. The other center was matching opposites. The last center was playing with water beads in the pool. No water beads, until all the academic activities had been completed. So....there were lots of hard working, focused children excited about getting a turn at the Touch and Feel pool!
Ms. Danielle was here today for Young Athletes. Today we worked on kicking and trapping a soccer ball. We started by kicking a soccer ball around a circle, saying our friends name first so they would know we were kicking in their direction. Then we partnered up with a friend and kicked the ball, trapped the ball with one foot, and kicked it back. These were easy, little kicks, until Ms. Danielle moved us further apart. Aiming the ball isn't our strong suit! Everyone did a great job kicking and trapping today....despite the chilly weather outside!
Today we had music with Ms. Stacey. For our Hello song, we reviewed the word acapella, which means singing with no music. After that, we started a new song for the month of April, The Bare Necessitites from the movie, The Jungle Book. We'll be working on learning all the words by singing it every week this month, especially the tricky word, necessities. Next, everyone got a boomwhacker and we had to watch closely and take turns in groups to play the song In The Jungle (The Lion Sleeps Tonight). It's sometimes tough to remember to keep paying attention even when it's not your turn! After that, we sang a song about the four layers of the rainforest - emergent, canopy, understory, and floor. We choose animals form the bag and decided what layer they might live in, and then sang about that layer. We practiced singing acapella again for our goodbye song.
Our book today was One Day In The Jungle by Colin West. This story starts with the tiny sneeze of a butterfly....that spreads to a louder, bigger sneeze of the lizard.....that spreads to a louder, bigger sneeze of the parrot....then the monkey...until, watch out, everybody....the elephant is going to sneeze! The kids loved helping say ACHOO each time....especially when it got to the gigantic sneeze of the elephant.
We ended the day with Mr. Jon and MyGym. After some stretching we did an animal relay race. The kids had to listen to find out which animal they would be moving around like, and then freeze when told so they could get ready for the next animal. After that Mr. Jon taught us how to do Eagle Rolls. These are rolls where we don't use our hands. Next, we used squishy string balls for our "surprises". We followed directions and did what Mr. Jon asked us to do. Lastly, we played a game were we had to throw the "trash" from our yard (one side of the fence) to Mr. Jon's yard (the other side of the fence). This game was definitely chaos....but we decided that the kids won! Before we headed out to find Mommies....we learned our practice skill of the day: Frog Hops. This skill works on leg strength. You squat down and touch your feet, then jump up as high as you can, landing back down in a squat. The challenge is to try and move forward as they do the skill!
