The Touch and Feel Pool today was full of colored shapes. The kiddos made designs, patterns, and talked about the different shapes. You wouldn't have thought that the basic shapes could keep them entertained for so long, but they definitely had their creative juices flowing!
We headed outside to find Ms. Ariel....but she wasn't in the courtyard where we usually meet her! So...we moved to the playground instead to get some movement in while we waited. It turns out that Ms. Ariel isn't coming this year....it's Ms. Danielle....who got lost trying to find Speech Garden. We got it all figured out, and the kids got to play outside.....we will try again next week with Ms. Danielle and Young Athletes!
Miss Stacey was here for music today! We started out by learning our hello song, Hello Sunshine, by copycat singing, and each kiddo had the opportunity to share their name. What a class of great voices! We'll use the same hello song every Wednesday. Next, we took a look at the house picture on the board and took turns catching a die to help build the family to live in it. For each member of the family, we sang a new verse of our song with different movements - we clapped, stomped, snapped, shook our heads, and more! We introduced the concept of keeping a steady beat, which means listening to the whole group and making our sounds all at the same time. We'll keep working on this in music this fall. After that, everyone got a shaker and we did some dancing! Our song, I Have A Family (to the tune of We Are Family) gave directions on how to shake our shakers, so we had to listen close for what to do next. Finally, we ended up with a goodbye song called See You Later, Alligator. We'll use that one every week too. It's going to be a fun year in music!
Our book today was If Big Can....I can by Beth Shoshan. The book is about Big Bear and Little Koala Bear. Koala learns that sometimes it's harder to be small, but small bears can still do everything that big bears can do. We talked about how our big brothers/sisters and little brothers/sisters sometimes feel this way....and why we should always be a good friend to them.
After lunch we had our first session with Mr. Jon and MyGym. We started with a basic warmup to get our muscles moving and practice following directions. Then Mr. Jon led us in a following directions relay. The kids have to move their bodies exactly like Mr. Jon. He walked slowly, taking really big steps, and then then tiptoed, and then hopped around in a circle. The next activity was for each child to take a turn at doing a forward roll on the mats. There are three important steps for a forward roll....feet apart, chin down, hands glued to the floor. Everyone was very brave and took a turn. Then Mr. Jon gave all the kids a plastic ring. They did some pretend play and following directions with the ring before using it for a game. The game was a "keep away" sort of activity, where Mr. Jon was trying to protect the rings and the kids were trying to take them out of the basket. Let's just say that there was LOTS of laughter during this game! MyGym always ends with a practice skill and today's skill is Jump Open Shut. This skill works on your child's coordination, balance and gross motor control. The children start with feet together and at once jump their feet open then to shut position. The challenge is to get them to move their feet simultaneously.
